I have lived in the heart of Washington, D.C. for over 30 years. I love my city and cannot imagine living anywhere else except maybe Jerusalem. One very cold winter night in 2003, we were heading back to our house around 1:00 am. We had been out of town, and we were anxious to get back to a warm home. As we headed down 14th street, we stopped to make a left-hand turn onto our street. The light was red, and we noticed a man standing on the street corner. He was a middle aged African American, wearing a thin members only type jacket that definitely didn’t look warm enough for the artic night. In his hands he was waving a huge Israeli flag. My whole family sat in the car amazed and stunned by the scene. Here we were in the middle of Washington, D.C., in an area that just a few years earlier was major “hood”, and here was this man, at 1:00 am, waving an Israeli flag! As soon as we were able, we made the left-hand turn onto our street and pulled our van up to the curb to question the guy about what he was doing. He gave us a huge smile and started folding up his flag. We asked him, “why are you out here?” his response was this:
SOMEONE NEEDS TO TAKE A STAND FOR THESE PEOPLE.
THEY ARE GETTING A BUM RAP!
This man, whether he was an angel or just a decent human being, made a great impression on me, and he is a major inspiration behind this blog.
